Not Enough Power Points at Home? It’s a Smaller Job Than You Think

Look, nobody gets excited about power points. You just want enough of them, where you actually need them, without a powerboard hanging off every wall. The fix is cheaper and quicker than most people think, and it starts with one phone call.
An upgrade means stripping out the old protection gear and fitting modern circuit breakers and safety switches in its place. Homes built around Southport, Labrador and Burleigh in the 60s, 70s and 80s were wired for a fridge, a telly and a washing machine. They were never designed for ducted aircon running all summer, a pool pump, an induction cooktop and half a dozen devices on charge. When the board can’t keep up, it overheats, trips, or worse.

The Powerboard Problem Every Gold Coast Home Knows

One outlet on the kitchen bench feeding the kettle, the toaster and the air fryer through a double adaptor. A powerboard octopus behind the TV. A home office desk running off an extension cord from the hallway. That setup is annoying every single day, and it overloads circuits that were never built for it.

The Fix: One Visit, One Fixed Price

Ring James, tell him what you need, and he’ll talk you through the options and give you a fixed price. Then he turns up, puts the points where they should have been all along, and leaves the walls clean. Done in a visit.

Power Point Installation and Replacement Services Gold Coast

Here is what James and the team install and replace every week across the Coast, from single swap-outs to full renovation fit-offs.

Not sure what you need? Ring James on 0487 331 842 and describe the job. Simple ones get a fixed price over the phone.

How Many Power Points Does Your Home Actually Need?

More than the builder gave you. That’s the short answer for nearly every home on the Coast.
As a working guide: a kitchen bench wants at least two double points clear of the sink and cooktop. Bedrooms need a double each side of the bed. A home office needs four to six outlets at the desk, not a powerboard. Garages want a double on each wall, plus a 15 amp point if you run tools. Living rooms need a bank behind the TV unit.
Every home is different, though. James looks at how you actually use each room, tells you where points earn their keep and where they’d be wasted, then quotes a fixed price. Customers tell us that advice is half the value of the visit.

How Long Does It Take to Install a Power Point?

Most single power points are in and working within the hour, and a single to double conversion is often quicker. Bigger jobs with new wiring runs or multiple points usually still finish inside a day, in one visit. Power is only off briefly while James connects the new point, then everything gets tested and certified before he packs up.
Some electricians will not touch anything near the meter. James handles meter box upgrades on the Gold Coast as part of the job, including coordinating with Energex where the mains or metering needs attention. One electrician, one quote, the whole box sorted.

Power Points for Every Gold Coast Property, Old or New

The Gold Coast has post-war cottages, canal mansions, high-rise units and brand-new estates, and each one has its own power point story. James works across all of them.

Older Homes Around Southport and Labrador

Plenty of post-war homes between Southport and Labrador still run one single power point per room, because that’s all anyone needed in 1965. The result today is extension-cord living. Conversions and new points fix it, and if the wiring behind the walls is original, James will tell you honestly what’s safe to build on and what isn’t.

New Estates in Coomera, Pimpama and Oxenford

Builders fit the minimum the contract asks for. Owners in the new estates around Coomera and Pimpama ring James before the furniture arrives to add points where the plans missed: the study nook, the garage workbench, behind the wall-mounted TV, the outdoor kitchen. Cheaper and cleaner to do it before you move in.

Apartments, Body Corporate and Carpark Power Points

Unit living from Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach comes with its own rules. James installs points in apartments and basement carparks, including individually metered points on embedded networks where the body corporate requires them. One honest tip: check your bylaws and get body corporate approval first, then ring James. He’ll handle the electrical side and the paperwork that goes with it. If the carpark point is step one towards proper vehicle charging, have a look at our EV charger installation page.

Renovations and New Builds from Palm Beach to Burleigh

The renovation wave through the southern beach suburbs is the perfect time to plan power points properly instead of patching them in later. James works in with builders and other trades, roughs in during the frame stage, and fits off when the walls are done.

Can You Install a Power Point Yourself in Queensland?

No. In Queensland, installing or replacing a power point is licensed electrical work, and doing it yourself is illegal no matter how handy you are or whose house it is.

The Electrical Safety Office runs a whole campaign about this, and the penalties are real. Unlicensed electrical work carries fines of up to $40,000 for individuals. If the work exposes someone to a risk of death or serious injury, the maximum penalty climbs to $600,000 or five years’ imprisonment. In one Queensland case, an unlicensed worker was fined $45,000 after doing electrical jobs for 27 customers, including power points.

If your switchboard is older and doesn’t have safety switches on the power circuits, that gets sorted first. James checks your board as part of the quote, and if it needs work you can read what’s involved on our switchboard upgrade page.

The fines

Up to $40,000 for unlicensed work, rising to $600,000 or five years’ prison where it creates serious risk. Electrical safety inspectors investigate and prosecute.

The insurance sting

If a house fire traces back to illegal electrical work, your insurer can refuse the claim. The cheapest power point in the world is not worth your policy.

The safety switch rule

Under AS/NZS 3000, the wiring rules, any new or altered power point circuit must have safety switch (RCD) protection. If your board is older and has no safety switches on the power circuits, that gets sorted first as part of the job.

How Much Does Powerpoint Installation Cost on the Gold Coast?

Most standard power points cost between $150 and $300 installed. A straight swap of an existing point sits at the low end. A new point that needs a wiring run through walls or ceilings sits higher. A 15 amp point costs more again, usually $300 to $500 plus, because it needs its own dedicated circuit back to the switchboard.

Standard power point

$150–$300

Installed, tested and certified

15 amp point

$300–$500+

On its own dedicated circuit

Two things keep your cost down. First, do several points in one visit. The per-point price drops because James is already there with the gear out. Second, get a fixed price before work starts. James quotes the full job up front, so the invoice matches the quote. No hourly meter running, no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most standard power points cost $150 to $300 installed. Swapping an existing point sits at the low end, new points needing a wiring run cost more, and 15 amp points on dedicated circuits run $300 to $500 plus. James quotes a fixed price before starting, and doing several points in one visit lowers the cost per point.

No. Installing a power point is licensed electrical work in Queensland, and DIY carries fines of up to $40,000, rising to $600,000 or five years’ prison where it creates serious risk. A fire caused by unlicensed work can also void your home insurance. Ring a licensed sparky. It is a cheap job done legally.

Replace a power point if it is cracked, yellowed, warm to touch, has burn marks, hangs loose from the wall or only works on one side. These are signs of a tired outlet or a loose connection behind the plate, which builds heat inside the wall. Book the swap promptly rather than waiting.

Yes. Under AS/NZS 3000, any new or altered power point circuit must have RCD safety switch protection. If your switchboard does not have safety switches on the power circuits, that is fixed as part of the job. James checks your board before quoting so there are no surprises.

Yes, and it is one of the cheapest electrical jobs going because the wiring is already in the wall. It is a common fix in older homes around Southport and Labrador that were built with one single point per room.

Yes, in the right spots. Bedside tables, kitchen benches and study desks get the most value, since built-in USB-A and USB-C ports free up the sockets. Stick with quality name-brand units. The cheap ones go stiff and often fail within a year.

Yes. Outdoor points must be weatherproof, IP-rated for their location and on RCD-protected circuits, and points near pools have strict clearance rules under AS/NZS 3000. James fits salt-air-resistant gear on canal and beachside homes and sorts compliant placement as part of the quote.

A 15 amp power point has a wider earth pin and runs on its own dedicated circuit. You need one for caravans, welders, some pool equipment and bigger workshop gear. It cannot just be swapped onto a standard circuit, which is why it costs more than a regular point.

Most single power points are installed in under an hour, and a single to double conversion is often quicker. Bigger jobs with new wiring runs or multiple points usually still finish inside a day, in one visit.

As a guide: two double points on a kitchen bench, a double each side of the bed, four to six outlets at a home office desk, and a double on each garage wall. James advises room by room during the quote, so you get points where they will actually be used.
